Aedes Ars Eileen Donan Castle is a fortress located on the small island of the same name that rises to the side of Lake Dutch, northwest of Scotland, which is in turn connected with the nearby Atlantic Ocean via Lake Alsh. It is only accessible by boat or through a narrow stone bridge that communicates the island with the shore of the lake, reason why in its day it turned out to be a powerful fortress very difficult to take. The nearest town is Kyle of Lochalsh, less than 8 miles away, not far from Inverness. The present castle began to be constructed in 1220 by order of Alexander II of Scotland on the ruins of an old fort used by the Picts, like defence against the Viking raids. It is said to have been one of the shelters used by Robert the Bruce when he fled from the English invasions of Edward I. The castle later became the residence of the McRae clan before being abandoned shortly after the union between Scotland and England. In 1719 it was occupied by a Spanish expedition that had like to raise militarily the Scots against the British crown. After a month of occupation, three British frigates penetrated in the lake Alsh and from there they massively bombarded the fort until the foreign troops surrendered and were taken prisoner. Eileen Donan Castle was then abandoned in a state of ruin until John MacRae-Gilstrap restored it between 1912 and 1932. Today it is one of the most visited places by tourists who come to Scotland and remains the residence of the Clan McRae. The surroundings of the castle have been chosen for the filming of several films in recent years.
